Do You Know How Columbian Coffee Is Made?

Updated on September 2, 2009

Columbian coffee is one of the most popular types of coffee around, and many lovers of this Java feel that it is the best in the world. So what do you think? Perhaps, you will be able to better decide if you know exactly how Columbian coffee is made.

The very first step in the Columbian Java process is that the beans of the coffee plant are harvested in a nursery. However, there is not just one plant being grown, but there are thousands of them. They are grown very closely together and topped with rich soil to help them healthy during the cultivation process. It takes eight weeks for the roots develop after the seed has germinated, and the workers on the coffee plantation will inspect the plants carefully to select the healthiest ones to be transplanted within the nursery. After they are transplanted, they are attended to for six more months.

When the plants have finally grown to 2 feet tall, they will be moved to the plantation and transplanted to be grown there. It takes almost 4 years for a coffee tree to grow to its full size, and after that point, it will bear fruit after six months. Coffee trees are unique from other fruit trees because they grow both flowers and fruit simultaneously. Overall, every coffee tree that is grown can yield 1 pound of coffee on a yearly basis. Now you know where your pound of Java comes from!

When the beans are ready to be harvested, they will look like red berries on the tree. They are all individually picked from the tree, and then they are harvested by being put through a de-pulping machine. This machine works to separate the pulp from the beans within the berry. There are normally two coffee beans within each berry, and when they are separated from the pulp, the pulp is then returned to be fertilizer. The beans will after that be soaked in cold water for 24 hours, which will allow them to begin to ferment to create a better aroma.

Following that, the coffee beans will be rinsed off in long troughs to remove any debris. This is what is unique about Colombian Coffee because they use the washing process to bring an even better taste to the beans. After that, the beans are prepared to be dried, and they are spread out in an open air area to be dried by the wind and the sun. They must be turned numerous times within this process and also covered at night to prevent them from being corrupted by moisture.

This is just a small taste of how your Colombian Java was cultivated within its growth process, and one thing to keep in mind is the high standards used in Columbia for their coffee production. The National Federation of Coffee Growers of Columbia sends their representatives to constantly inspect the coffee growth processes, enabling you to have an even better final product in your Colombian cup of Joe!
