Puerto Rico is a diverse country that has its own authentic flavor and cuisine, which is formulated from American, African, and Spanish influences. When it comes to coffee drinking, Puerto Rico is a country to take notice of because they produce a strong and rich coffee product that has been cultivated there for over 300 years.
Puerto Rico provides a high altitude atmosphere for coffee growing, which is very important for a superior coffee crop. The reason that a high altitude is a necessary is because it provides a cloud cover to the coffee trees, which allows them to grow more slowly to develop and mature their flavors more deeply. Originally, Puerto Rico imported their coffee from their neighboring country, the Dominican Republic, and today, coffee is one of the main exports of this island and a staple of the native culture.
As a country, coffee was first introduced to Puerto Rico when it was brought from Costa Rica in the 1700s. After several decades, coffee beans became an important crop exported by this small island, and nowadays, this coffee is recognized as being a premium variety worldwide. In the 1800s, coffee that came from Puerto Rico demanded a high price when it was exported to the United States and Europe. Two large hurricanes in 1899 devastated the coffee crops, and it took years for the farmers to rebuild their harvests.
As a coffee drinker, there is a significant difference in flavor between Puerto Rican and Brazilian coffee. If you're familiar with Brazilian coffee, it produces a lighter flavor with less complexity in the brew. On the flipside, authentic Puerto Rican coffee is full-bodied and rich with fully developed flavors. It is something that can be noticed on the palate, and it provides a memorable coffee experience compared to other beans cultivated worldwide. One main feature in the purchase of Puerto Rican coffee beans is that they are much less expensive than commercially produced coffee since they are a domestic product to the United States.
To make an authentically delicious cup of Puerto Rican coffee, it can be brewed on the stovetop. The ratio should be 1 cup of water for every brewed cup of coffee desired, and start by bringing this water to a boil on the stove. Freshly grind your coffee beans, and use 1 tablespoon of coffee grounds for every cup of water. When the water has not yet come to a boil, add the fresh coffee grounds to the water on the stove. Stir well, but keep the water from boiling. Turn off the heat, and allow the mixture to brew for a few minutes, stirring several times. After this time, strain the coffee through a filter or cheesecloth, and pour directly into your coffee cup.
This is definitely a delicious brew to try black because it brings so many flavors to the table, and it can be sweetened with sugar and milk to your liking. Puerto Rican coffee offers a one-of-a-kind flavor profile and taste!

This is exactly what I was looking for! Long story short, my mother is white, father is puerto rican. When I was growing up I would visit my father on the weekends and as a child, I was allowed to drink coffee for breakfast. Just one cup. My step mother cooked it on top of the stove, and it was soooo good! I've been wanting to learn how to do this myself, and I can't ask my father because he walked out on me at age 12. He went back to Puerto Rico and never looked back. So, I've been trying to teach myself my puerto rican side and have been dieing to learn how to make coffee. I'm still going to shop around for recipes. But this is great, you give the basics! I'm surprised this has not been voted up or rated, it's a great hub. Maybe I think that because I know how YUMMY this coffee is! Nothing like it!
