The Nightmare Before Christmas Review

What do Tim Burton and Christmas have in common? Everything if you are a fan of the spooky film The Nightmare Before Christmas from 1993. Firstly, I have to say from a biased point of view that the 90s were a wonderful decade, so almost any movie from that time frame brings back a certain special nostalgia for me. Especially this movie…

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a strange and interesting look inside the head of Tim Burton, and although it may confuse you at first, you will be addicted to his film style in no time. This animated film takes Burton’s previous projects like Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice to the next level, and although the whole theme is morbid, it is also quite uplifting.

Jack Skellington, with the voice of Chris Sarandon, is a resident of spooky Halloween Town. While he’s taking a walk in the woods one day, he finds a doorway to Christmas Town, where he suddenly discovers a warm spirit of goodwill exhibited by all of the happy residents with their snowy streets and decorated Christmas trees. He is so caught up in this fantastical idea that when he gets home, he convinces all of the other residents of Halloween Town to abandon Halloween altogether and instead embrace Christmas.

The only glitch is that Jack’s master plan doesn’t translate as well as he had hoped, especially when little children find severed heads in their stockings instead of your run-of-the-mill stocking stuffers. In short, this movie will offer you a dark alternative to the traditional Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas by poking fun at the many commercial holiday festivities.

Beyond this creative plot, the music by Danny Elfman truly stands out as a soundtrack that is definitely representative of Tim Burton with a holiday twist. The music itself is timeless and spooky (reminding me most of Edward Scissorhands), and it provides a soundscape that makes this animated movie a masterpiece. The Nightmare Before Christmas is only 76 minutes, so you can make it a quick holiday family favorite this season between opening your presents and Christmas dinner. The only warning is that although it’s rated PG, it might be a slightly scary for younger children, which also makes it a perfect holiday pick for adults who love the horror genre.
