This is a very interesting statement since it seems like a total oxymoron, especially when you feel like you are plagued with fiery breath after a long morning and several cups of Joe, but research may prove otherwise. A specific study done by Mel Rosenberg of Tel Aviv showed that extracts from Java actually work to fight and kill the bacteria that is causing bad breath. So what does this mean for coffee drinkers everywhere?
The only clause to this fantastic information is that the specific extract that you can find in coffee to fight bad breath is within the entire brew so it's not having the Listerine effect on you that you would hope. The real facts behind the matter are that coffee itself is not giving you foul breath, but it is because it works as a diuretic to thoroughly dehydrate your mouth, which leaves it as a breeding ground for fermenting bacteria. This is where rancid smelling coffee breath comes into play, and it can become even worse when you couple it with the milk and sugar that is normally used a cup of Joe, which mixes with the bacteria on your tongue.
If you find yourself stuck in the office, about to meet with a client, and trying to combat some serious bad coffee breath, there are a few simple tricks that you can do. Firstly, it would be a wonderful idea to bring a travel bottle of Listerine to work with you if you are an avid coffee drinker, but if you are in a pinch, then you can do a few things to get rid of that bacteria, and fast. One main way to keep your mouth from getting dehydrated and breeding bacteria in this way is to chug water on a regular basis to keep liquids pumping through your body to avoid cotton mouth and bad breath. If bad breath has already set upon you, you can actually use a spoon to scrape your tongue, which removes a lot of the nasty bacteria. If you have a lemon handy, it works well to quickly suck on a lemon so that the acids can neutralize the bad breath and all of that bacteria.
Hopefully these tips can get you through the workday, until that long-awaited coffee toothpaste and mouthwash is on the market for us! Glorious.
